Subject:just found out...
During a conversation with my mom via phone in Germany we talked about family events/history. Always knew my Grandmother trekked on foot with 3 of her 4 daughters ( including my mom )for 14 days. Even picked up a strange child along the way to get back to Berlin. The child had a scribbled note with an address in Berlin. Delivered her safe & sound by the way to the noted relative. They reunited briefly later in Berlin and thanked my grandmother. Just found out today the reason for my grandmother trekking through the depths of winter with her children. It was because she changed her mind to board the ship Wilhelm Gustloff at the very last moment. Argueing that she has extreme fear of water & doesn't know how to swim... The rest is history. I'm awestruck and feel intrigued to learn about this disaster and I think how it affected my own personal life/fate.

Subject:My father and his sisters were going to be on the ship that night
My father was Kurt Mollenhauer. He and his sisters, Gertrude and Riche were supposed to be on that ship the night of the sinking. They were from Koenigsberg, and my father cried so hard and begged his sisters not to get on board. I am not sure if it was my father's tearful influence, but they did not board. However, it is my understanding that several members of the family from my grandmother's side - the Gerwin's did and perished. They went on to a refugee camp in Berlin, and it is only now through books and documentaries that I am piecing together the story of his early life.

Unfortunately history is only as good as the people that write it, especially during a confict , and getting facts from all sides and coming to a middle ground is, I suppose, the only way of getting closest to the true history. Like a lot of people I had never heard of the Wilhelm Gustloff disaster, and thank you and the website for provoking a fresh and moving account of human suffering that should not be forgotten, whether that tradegy be Western,Soviet, Jewish or German. Having children myself, struck a chord, which has not made me think like that for a long time. That is the only link I can have with this ,or any similar disaster, but it is a very powerful one. History is a very cruel, selective but fascinating subject, and thanks to people like you,a little more enlightened.

In one of his books, Heinz Schoen claims that the 'Gustloff' was involved in transporting Baltic Germans to the Reich in October/November 1939. But I can find no evidence of this; the ship does not appear on any of the transport lists, or in any of the reports by those resettled (and I have been to several archives). Can anyone shed light? Thanks.

I was shocked to learn about this terrible tragedy through your website, to which I landed accidentally. You have made a terrific job illuminating this piece of history, and your English copy (text) is very well written. The souls of the thousands of innocent people that were slain in a monstrous and cruel way, deserve, at least, their tragic fate to be known to the world. Thank you very much for your effort, and keep on the good work. George Papadakis Athens, Greece

I think some of you may be interested in a drawing I have recently completed on the 'Wilhelm Gustfloff'. It shows her slowly coming ahead whilst the 'Lowe' crosses her bow. The weather is snowy, the time is midday on the day of her departure. I do all my drawings in MS Paint, but they are significantly image enhanced - there is no 'photoshopping' involved. The resolution is usually 300DPI which is industry standard - but I do not sell my work. It is free to download providing people are honest enough to send a donation to one of the sea rescue charities in their country, or to a maritime charity if not. My own preffered charity iis the UK's RNLI. As I cannot find any actual reference to her paint scheme at the time of her departure, I have depicted her as she is normally seen in the many photographs of her that remain. If it is wrong, or not factual, then I plead artistic license! The direct link to the drawing is: http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt242/ddraigmor/GustloffMaster2.jpg Best regards, John Griffiths

I had heard about it but never had I read such a good and detailed description of the disaster. It is touching. It is shocking and sad that so many innocent lives were taken. One wishes they were all military and nazis...at least it would sort of justify and make the sinking more excusable. Only an heart full of revenge and hatred can say "...the Germans deserved it". No innocent life deserves to be taken only because someone of the same race is evil and does evil. And I sincerely hope that Hollywood or any other studio does not decide to make a propaganda movie or romanticized money making story about such a huge scale calamity. May the souls of all those who perishd rest in Peace.

Hallo! My name is Natascha Iwanowa. I represent Russian scuba divers' volunteer group searching for ships died in Baltic Sea (former East Prussia part, now Kaliningrad & Pillau). For the time being we're investigating the ship found near Pillau that could be probably artillery training ship DRACHE (built in 1908, sank in April 1945). We're also investigating the wreck that could be an ice breaker of Erik Koch: either CASTOR or POLLUX. Could anyone help with names of the crews and contacts of their relatives? We're looking for any documents of DRACHE/copies of letter of marine cadets/anything! Please, let us know. These are ships to be identified. The war is over for a long time. We must fill in the gaps in the history!!! Another question: could you pls advise if Mr Heinz Schoen is still alive? Sorry for such a question. If so, could we meet him? Regards, Natascha

Wolfgang Waschki

History is written by the victors. But how many events, maybe not of the same scale as this horror, have been hidden from view. We are told of the "evil" that Germany and Japan dealt out during WW2, I was told as a child of the bombings and mass graves in my home town in Yorkshire - but little of the terror the Allies wrought on the peoples of Germany. Maybe British and German schools should swap history books so we can see history from both sides? It still amazes me how few people in the UK know of the Wilhelm Gustloff. We should never forget and never let our children forget, because it could happen again. To those who still live who survived the sinking - TELL YOUR STORY LOUD AND CLEAR.

Just wanted to leave a note of praise for the brave captain and hero Alexander Marinesko. By sinking the Gustloff, he sent over a thousand Nazi soldiers, sailors, and U-Boat crews to their much deserved watery deaths. I hope that in their last gasping breaths the Nazi butchers appreciated the irony of falling victim to the type of warfare they themselves perfected. Rarely does hell get these many new visitors in a single night.

When I was young my mother mentioned that she had been torpedoed twice in the Baltic. My sister Gisela come over from Germany last week and during a conversation I mentioned mums war years. Many years ago Gisela had asked mum if she wanted to go swimming and mum stated 'no' outright so my sister asked, was it because she could not swim? It was then that mum mentioned the Wilhelm Gustloff. My mum was in the Ack Ack and fled over to Gotenhafen and boarded the Wilhelm Gustloff. My mum mentioned to my sister that she was glad she did not go into the swimming pool to keep out of the draft from the ship. When the boat was torpedoed mum jumped into the water with her heavy coat and boots on. After reading all the details on this site I just wished I had asked a thousand questions at the time of how it was leading up to going on board during and what happened to her after. I would like to say thank you to all the people who helped put this information together so I can understand what happened before, during and after that tragic night as sadly mum died many years ago.

My Grandmother Eva was on board the Gustloff when it was destroyed by "soviets." She was 16 and was aboard with her six year old sister and her mother. They were trying to escape Gotenhafen for the West (like many of the passengers.) Eva, my grandmother, was the only survivor; her mother and sister both drowned. Worse yet, she couldn't even go back to Gotenhafen after the war for years, for no one wanted to travel that far East (for obvious reasons.)

My Grandmother, Elli Blum, was a survivor of the Wilhelm Gustloff tradgedy. She was one of the nurses on board. Keil, Germany was her home. She passed way a few years ago. When she was alive she rarely spoke of her experience-she was not allowed to. We found a picture of her as a young naval auxiliary nurse. The picture was folded in half and hidden in a book.

We all understand that history is written by the winners, so we only read about crimes from the losers and never from the winners. It looks like wars are made by angels (the winners) and demons (the losers) Furthermore we like to blame the other nations as a unit, without thinking about those many people forced into a situation they never wanted. Also I woulkd like to ask why , referring to nazis actions, very often comes the word "fascist" !! The fascists were the Italians only, and they had nothing to do with Nazi actions !

I also would like to know where I can find the symbols the ship sported as a passenger liner, so I can finish my SketchUp model and if in fact the ship as refugee vessel was still in navy grey painting. Thanks! =) PS: Both models will be sent to this website as they will be finished, as well the SketchUp model on the respective Google SketchUp Image Bank @ sketchup.google.com.

Norway was occupied by Hitler-Germany from April 9th to May 8th 1945. At the age of 13 I saw "Wilhelm Gustloff" at the "Tjuvholmen" pier in Oslo harbour - most probably in November 1940. I saw the impressive white ship with its green line on the hull and a single red cross on the ship's single funnel from a train window across the harbour. In 1944 I spoke with a Norwegian lady that had been invited abord the ship by a German officer that had shown her the ship. In particular she remembered the gutters for blood in the floors in the operating theaters. Secondary comments: At that time at the end of the harbour were the Town Hall with a place in front of it. Then on the west side of the harbor was the Shipyard "Akers. Mek. Verksted" (Aker's Mechanical Workshop) - who buildt the ship M/S Goya - with a dry dock and a floating dock. Today the area is urban wih restaurants, shops, offices and apartments. Today the dry dock is a channel and boat mooring space. Then came the Tjuvholmen pier and that area are these days developed as an urban area also. In 1940 the Tjuvholmen pier was protruding into the harbor, closed to the public and guarded by Geman soldiers. The name Tjuvholmen came from the slang word Tjuv = Thief = tyv, and "holmen" means a very small island. In the Middle age the small island was inhabited by some thiefs. Later the small island were connected to the main land by filling in and made to a pier and today to an urban area.

"Es stank fürcherlich" sagte sie und er jammerte bis der Tod eintraf. Sie hat bis heute Albträume von dem Untergang, sie sagt, sie hört die Schreie der Menschen noch heute. Es muss eine furchtbare Katastrophe gewesen sein...

Also, I noticed in one of the e-mails that another ship left the day after and made it safely. Is there any info on this ship or the people that were aboard? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Subject:Anninversary of sinking of theShip
For some unexplicable reason while surfing the net I punched the words Wilhelm Gustloff into the web search machine. Than I begun to read the information and suddenly realized that on the 30th of January 1945 a few minutes past 9pm the ship had been struck by the three fatal torpeedos...why now, why me ,why tonight this time I did what I did? I live near Gdynia, during the war called Gottenhafen, the ship sank northwards off the shores of the town Stolp than, today Slupsk: I live approx less tham 200 km south from this spot... I will say a prayer tonight for the Souls of the Victims of that tragedy. May Lord have all those Souls near Him tonight.I will switch the reason and the judgement as to why them why him, why the politics been such than. I will try to just say a value free prayer for all those Souls...May They rest in Peace, Tom
